The adoption of Islam by African Americans is closely related to identity issues and
Black Nationalism within this community. The origins of their identity complication
go back to their struggles during slavery when they were stripped bare from their
identity and culture. By embracing Islam, African Americans split from the stereotypes related to Blacks and forge a new identity. The conversion to Islam by this minority is a strategy to separate from the "slavery" identity and adopt a different life. Islam reflects the determination of blacks to isolate themselves from anything that identifies them with slavery or with the predominant culture.
