Abstract

Minerals can have beneficialeffects on men'shealth; as they can harmit and cause disease. The beneficial and detrimentaleffects of minerals on health are twofacets of medicalgeology, a new and promising discipline in the earth sciences thatisincreasinglyattracting the interest of scientists.

Manytexts of the Arab-Islamicmineral and medicinalheritageconfirmthat the cooking of food or itsconsumption in mineral containers (lead) or the pollution of water or air by the emission of mineralsmoke (the mercury) can cause various and deadlydiseases.

In thisresearch, we have limitedourselves to the medicalencyclopedia of Ibn Sina "The canon of medicine" which, in someparagraphs of the (sixth art) of the (fourth book), deals with the effects on health of somemineralstoxicitysuchas:mercury, arsenic, vitriol, isfidage (a lead compound) etc.

The health damage caused by the toxicity of theseminerals can besummarized as follows: Colic and pain affecting the abdomen and stomach; Cuts in the stomach and ulcerations; Headache and heaviness of the tongue; Retention of urine and excrement; Stomach ache and diarrhea; color changes of body, face, tongue and urine; shortness of breath, diphtheria and severity of cough; roughness of the palate and the tongue and theirdryness; body relaxation and weakness; cold limbs and brain; epilepsy, convulsions and mindmuddle.

In case of poisoning by one of theseminerals, Ibn Sina described one or more treatments. Treatmentsbeginwithprovokingvomiting by making the patient drink rose oil, daisyoil, sassoonoil or daffodiloil;thenhe drinks honey water or itisinjectedwith Borax or the patient drinks diuretics as well as heart-stimulatingdrugs or laxatives (in the case of poisoningwithgibsin for example), softeners and fattydrugs, or he drinks milk (jenny-assmilk for example), or butter and sugar (in the case of intoxication with vitriols and alum).

It shouldbenotedthatNutritherapy, is one of the mostwidelyusedmethodstoday, for the treatment of poisoning by minerals. It eliminatesheavyminerals' toxins but itis not enough to getrid of it.
