We study the biodiversity status of macrophyte communities and seagrass in Oualidia lagoon and assess species composition in the area. The sampling site is located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, considered as one of the four Moroccan sites that the RAMSAR Convention considered for the conservation of wetlands of international interest. In a 50 cm× 50 cm quadrat, we used scuba diving to collect samples from sixty-eight stations on 2021. Our study recorded 17 macroalgae species and seagrass with Sargassum muticum, noted as a new record for this area. The most dominant division with the highest species richness was Rhodophyta, with 9 species representing 53% of the total species recorded, and Chlorophyta and Phaeophyta, with three species for each one making up 18% of the total species richness, respectively. Seagrass was represented by two species contributing 11% of the total species richness. This study will contribute to the seaweed database of Morocco for future references, which may help conserve seaweeds.References
