Abstract

A hydrodynamic finite element model was used to describe the water circulation in the lagoon of Oualidia (Morocco). The lagoon's hydrodynamic circulation was simulated considering tides and wind as the main governing forces of the hydrodynamic patterns within the lagoon. The purpose of this study is to understand the variability of current velocities mainly induced by winds and semi-diurnal tides of type M2 (period 12.42h) using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model, for the period from 01 to 15 April 2020. The wind-current and tidal variability on the mesoscale are well described. As a result, current velocities exceed 1 m. s-1 during spring tides and decrease to 0.3 m. s-1 during neap tides. The directions of the current follow the main axes of the channel, reversing 180 degrees between incoming and outgoing tides.
