Résumé

In recent decades, homestay tourism has gathered considerable interest from academics and tourism practitioners, given its potential as an alternative lodging option that allows guests to experience local culture and nature while fostering community connections. The current body of research offers insightful knowledge about the subject matter; Hence, to grasp a comprehensive understanding and capitalize on what has been done by former researchers, a systematic review of the literature is required. Surprisingly, our iterative search in prominent scholarly databases has not identified any published manuscript that systematically synthesizes prior works. To fill this gap, the present paper systematically reviews 62 selected journal articles on homestay tourism research, indexed SCOPUS, and WOS databases spanning the period 2012 to 2023. Qualitative analysis of these articles identified seven major research categories related to homestay tourism research, with a primary emphasis on modeling tourist behavior and intentions. Co-occurrence analysis of academic keywords highlights emerging trends in homestay research. The geographical contexts, research methodologies, and theories employed in the articles under review were also examined. The results show that the majority of publications were from the current decade, with China as the primary research setting and Asia as the continent with the utmost institutional contributions. The review concludes by offering implications for theory and practice, as well as recommendations for future research on homestay tourism.

Keywords: Homestay, Village tourism, Tourist satisfaction, Memorable experiences, Behavioral intentions.
