This article is a study on the writing of Ernesto Sábato - Argentine novelist, essayist, physicist and painter (1911-2011) - limited to the field of spelling, understood as the set of rules that govern the writing of a tongue.
The way a text is written, printed and presented to the reader with a certain appearance is as expressive and meaningful as its content. A capital letter, an italic letter, a parenthesis... are valuable resources that can configure a message, suggest an idea and nuance an opinion.
Our task in this article is to examine the style and way of writing of the Argentine novelist, tracing certain formal characteristics in his three novels: El túnel (1948), Sobre héroes y tumbas (1961) and Abaddón el exterminador (1973). We do not intend to analyze all of the particular orthographic uses in his narrative, rather our goal is to review a few representative examples or patterns that may provide us with specific information about Ernest Sábato's writing.
