Résumé

The purpose of this article is to analyze the cost of Gabonese public debt for future generations. The estimate made using the robust least squares method over the period 1996-2021 reveals that the Gabonese public debt represents a burden for future generations. Specifically, a rise in the stock of debt is accompanied, for future generations, by a fall in consumption and the crowding out of private investment, while arise in debt service increases the cost of living and leads to a reduction in the share of social security contributions. The originality of this article lies in the proposed measure of well-being which, in addition to house hold consumption, extends to private investment and pension payments for retirees. The article thus contributes to enriching a scarce literature on the consequences in terms of collective well-being of the Gabonese debt and draws attention to the need to avoid the accumulation of arrears, on the one hand, and to reform the Gabonese pension system, whose sustainability is increasingly questioned, on the other hand.
