New Contributions to the Research of the Rock Art of Barranco de Guayadeque (Agüimes - Ingenio, Gran Canaria Island). Space Analysis of Rock Art Manifestations

Pedro Javier Sosa-Alonso

Résumé

This paper presents new contributions to the study of the rock art in Barranco de Guayadeque, on the island of Gran Canaria. The ravine used to feature an important pre-European indigenous settling in the past and the legacy of its troglodyte inhabitants has been preserved up until today. Our study is focused in two different areas. On the one hand, understanding the context surrounding the rock art, so that a clear link between the rock art location and the rock art meaning can be established. On the other hand, the use of technologies applied to the documentation and registration of the panels with petroglyphs has allowed us to discover petroglyphs than expected at first.

Given the age and the degradation over the centuries of these manifestations, techniques such as photogrammetry and image analysis have been used to capture details that are invisible to the human eye.
