Abstract

The large amount of garbage generated during building and deconstruction presents serious environmental difficulties for the Turkish construction sector. This study looks into how market accessibility affects this industry's adoption of recycled materials. The goal of the research is to determine the factors that promote and hinder the adoption of recycled materials and to comprehend how market dynamics affect their use. Using a qualitative study approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 professionals from various jobs in the Turkish construction industry, such as project managers, engineers, and architects. Through purposive sampling, participants were chosen to obtain a wide variety of viewpoints; the majority of the participants came from Istanbul and a few other areas.

The findings reveal that the primary barrier to the adoption of recycled materials is their limited market availability and higher costs compared to traditional materials. Supply chain issues and underdeveloped recycling infrastructure further exacerbate these challenges. Additionally, the lack of clear government policies and financial incentives specifically targeting the construction sector hinders broader adoption. Despite these obstacles, there is a growing recognition of the environmental benefits and potential economic savings associated with recycled materials, particularly among medium-sized enterprises.

Key drivers identified include sustainability goals, client demand, and increasing public awareness. The study suggests that strategic investments in the recycling industry, improved regulatory frameworks, and enhanced stakeholder collaboration are crucial to overcoming existing barriers. These measures could significantly improve market availability and promote the adoption of recycled materials in Turkey.
