Abstract

Domestic architecture in Dougga presents multiple dissimilarities from one house to another, which were dictated by the location, the financial means allocated, the spatial experience and the degree of refinement of the owners. However, similarities were revealed in relation to the spatial typology, the arrangement of the different functional components around a peristyle atrium which constituted the heart of the residence and the qualification of the border limits in relation to the Street. The Roman house in Dougga would thus reflect an architectural program which would be adopted by a social category in order to respond to the needs and aspirations specific to each family, through a specific configuration, which offered multiple variations. Through this research work, we want to identify and understand the configurational and social rules that govern the space of the Roman house in Dougga.
