Les caféiculteurs et gouvernance foncière dans la province de la Tshopo en République Démocratique du Congo

Context and Background :
This article analyzes land governance in Tshopo Province, to understand the land issues underlying the process of agricultural investment in Robusta coffee production.
Goal and Objectives:
The aim are (i) to identify the social and political actors who enable coffee farmers to access land and (ii) to infer from data of this study, the land security or vulnerability of coffee farmers, referring to the law and local customs and practices.
Methodology:
Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. The study applies a normative approach centered on the actor, based on investigation and an analytical grid from a dual perspective: socio-anthropological and legal. Land vulnerability, land conflicts and the actors involved in negotiations or conflict resolution are also analyzed.
Results:
The results show that access to land depends on the category of actors. These actors are informal and formal. Coffee growers are legally vulnerable in relation to land. Compared with other provinces of the DRC, conflict-related land insecurity is relatively low in Tshopo. The actors involved in conflict resolution are sociologically valid but legally invalid. In conclusion, we proposed actions to contribute to the improvement coffee production.
