Abstract

Context and background

Protected areas are full of plant resources that are an important source of goods and services for humans. However, they have been overexploited in recent decades.

Goal and Objectives:

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of different land use units and their impact on the provision of ecosystem services in the OKNP.

Methodology:

Remote sensing techniques, mapping and GIS; field observations were the main methods used to achieve this objective. Landsat satellite images from 1985, 2005 and 2023 were used to map land use dynamics using Arcgis pro software.

Results:

The results show that between 1985 and 2005, there was a clear predominance of losses in several categories. The wooded/shrub savannah recorded about 80% loss, indicating a significant degradation of this category. Between 2005 and 2023, the wooded/shrub savannah and crops/fallow lands suffer an almost total loss, with about 95% of their surface transformed, suggesting a massive conversion of these lands. Dense forests show about 80% loss, although a small proportion remains stable, which reflects persistent deforestation. This anthropization of the OKNP leads to the degradation of the ecosystem services it provides. This study raises the problem of sustainable management of protected areas in Africa and Togo.
