Context and background:
This study is part of a reflective approach aimed at preserving agricultural land from rapid urbanization, particularly fertile lands, to maintain productivity and profitability in agriculture. It aims to combine effective territorial planning with rational use of agricultural lands.
Goal and objectives:
The aim of this study, conducted as a case study in the province of Chtouka-Ait Baha, is to classify agricultural lands into three categories to guide planning decisions, combining effective territorial planning with rational land use:
- Lands with high agricultural potential (Zones to be protected).
- Lands with moderate agricultural potential (Preservation Zones).
- Lands with low agricultural potential (Areas that can be urbanized in case of need, following specific standards).
Methodology:
The method we used highlights the contribution of remote sensing techniques, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Multi-Criteria Analysis Processes (AMC) based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).
Results and findings:
The outcome is an agricultural map for the Chtouka-Ait Baha province, which categorize agricultural lands according to their potential. This map will raise awareness among various stakeholders about the significance of delineating and safeguarding lands with high and moderate agricultural potential. It will also provide clear guidance for decision-making in selecting areas for urban development, particularly during the formulation of urban planning documents.
