Abstract

The study was carried out to audit the performance in the management of the water treatment plant at the lower Ruvu water treatment plant in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where the observed results were analyzed and discussed against the standards of practice and operational manuals. The identified problems were high water turbidity, corrosion to treatment units especially in the existing clarifier, unqualified plant operators, lack of personal protective equipment, poor monitoring, improper algae control method, water leakages, unreliable power supply, unqualified workers, no access way for cleaning of the storage tank hence increased problems in plant performance. Following the problems identified, several interventions have been recommended that include: the installation of a stand by generators for laboratory use and other treatment units, training of the workers with regard to the advancement of technology, employment of other plant operators who are qualified for laboratory and other units, especially for pumping units, the establishment of access ways to all plant units, provision of log books that shows both attended and non-attended problems in order to manage and maintain the facility in a systematic way of managing and maintenance of the facility, timely fixing of the reported problems to save money and water loss at the system. The recommendations given when fully implemented will minimize the identified problems to a greater extent.
