Abstract

This paper investigates Microbiological quality of drinking water using banana stem juice as a natural coagulant derives from plant-based compound as well as FITR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and elemental analysis to ascertain the efficacy and basic functional groups and elements that aid in effective treatment. To obtain optimum condition in the treatment process, Design of experiment using Design expert trial version 10 was adopted. Three basic factors considered with their range of values include Dosage (5-10 ml/L), Retention time (40-60min) and pH (6.5-8.5) with fifteen experimental runs generated and from the result obtained, the best result was obtained in experimental run five with removal efficiency of 88.33%, of E. coli at the optimum condition of dosage 5ml/L, Retention time of 50min and pH of 8.5. FITR analysis reveals adsorption peak with bands of 3250.2cm-1, 2922.2cm-1, 2307.2cm-1, 2150.7cm-1, 1580.4cm-1, 1449.9cm-1, 1401.5cm-1, 1308.3cm-1,1121.9cm-1, 1039.9cm-1 and 767.8cm-1 representing the presence of OH, C-H, O=C, O=C≡N, N-H, C-H, S=O, C-O, C-O, CO-O-CO and C=C. The function groups such OH, N-H and C-O are responsible for promoting coagulation-flocculation by neutralizing the charge impurities in the water. From the elemental analysis result, it was determined that banana stem juice contained 0.1317% carbon, 0.063% nitrogen, and 0.000519% Sulphur. From the overall result, it could be concluded that Banana Stem Juice showed tremendous potential as a natural coagulant for treatment of microbiological parameters as evidenced in the 88.33% percentage efficacy achieved.
