Chemical composition and potential acaricide of Salvia officinalis and Eucalyptus globulus on Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acarina: Tetranychidae)

Abstract

Essential oil chemical composition of Salvia officinalis and Eucalyptus globulus was assessed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In order to develop sustainable pest control, the present work aimed to evaluate the toxicity as contact acaricide of these plants against the two spotted spider mite, T. urticae, adults, larvae and eggs using a leaf disc bioassay method. The repellent effect and the persistence were also assessed.  Leaf discs treated with increasing concentrations of the two oils showed increased mortality of spider mite larvae and adults. S. officinalis oil proves more toxic against T. urticae than E. globulus oil. A mortality of 100% of adults and larvae was recorded by Salvia officinalis oil at doses of 2% and 1%, respectively. For these same doses, mortality was 63.29% of adults and 63.33% of larvae for E. globulus oil. However, both essential oils Causes a high reduction in the total numbers of eggs. Both materials used were potent against T. urticae with a significant increase in repellency. The most potent repellency effect was recorded for E. globulus. At 8%, repellent effect was 100% for E. globulus and 60% for S. officinalis. In other hand, Essential oils tested are non-persistent in the environment.

These results indicate that the essential oils of S. officinalis and E. globulus have the potential to be developed as botanical acaricides for eco- friendly management of T. urticae.
